Bob Pressner: Honoring the Journey Through Music
A Look at His Latest CD and the Path Leading Up to It
Bob Pressner's artistic journey has taken him to Wall Street, to the golf links, and to some of the best New York City clubs. It started with poetry and continues on its lyrical
way with his album, Honor Among Thieves. He shares his journey through his music and his writing, offering insights that help us all stop and think about our own paths. Bob took some time to share these with me and so now, I pass them along to you.
Angela Thor: Was music your first career choice?
Bob Pressner: I have been playing music my whole life, really, and I write songs every day, regardless of the outcome of that, so it always has been a part of my life. If anything, I think it's a little bit of a lesson in persistence. If you have a dream and you think you're good at something, then there's all the naysayers in the world but you've got to stick to it and keep on going.
AT: Do you remember when you wrote your first song?
BP: I've really been writing songs since I was 16, 17 years old. I believe the first one I wrote, actually, was a song called Vision Creek, which I have never recorded. It was when I first visited the mountains of Colorado and I was sitting by a stream and it was more of a poem. I studied poetry with some of the old Beat poets: Alan Ginsburg, William Burroughs, Gregory Corso. That kind of emerged as a basis for much of my writing. I came through this, really, as a poet, so that really, that started me off in a lot of ways.
